How to Register a Domain Name
Getting your own domain name and registering it is an easy way to add credibility to your business and is really your first step to getting your business online. This article will not only teach you how to register a domain name, but will talk about the importance of a domain name, how to choose a domain name, and general domain name tips.
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is your unique name for your web site. For example, www.londonontariowebdesign.com would be our domain name. The cost of registering a domain name can vary. There are thousands of registrars (company’s who are authorized to sell domain names) and the cost will usually be between $12-$35/year.
Why you NEED a Domain Name
The internet continues to rapidly grow. Every day, millions of customers are looking for products and services online… they are hungry for products, services, information, reviews, and much more. Having your own domain name allows you to have a unique brand online. Whether you choose your company name, a group of keywords, a catch phrase, or anything else… it will help provide a certain level of respect and credibility to your brand.
You should also register a good domain name soon, as thousands of domain names are registered every day and it is more than possible that one day, all of the good domain names will be taken. This means if you wait, you risk losing a good domain name or even worse, will be stuck paying a domain reseller hundreds or thousands of dollars for a domain name that would have only cost you $12-$35/year.
How to Choose a Domain Name
When choosing a domain name, there are two important factors to consider.

  1. Are you choosing a domain name for branding purposes?
  2. Are you choosing a domain name because your goal is to rank high in search engines for a specific keyphrase?
If you are looking to raise brand awareness or add brand credibility to the product or service you offer, I generally recommend people register a domain name that contains their company name.

If you are hoping to attract free search engine traffic as leads for your business, I recommend people register a domain name that contains keywords or a keyphrase that is specific to your business. For example, we chose our domain name of www.londonontariowebdesign.com believing that one of the top keyphrases people would type into Google to find us would be “London Ontario web design”. Search engines like Google use words in the domain name to understand better what a web site is all about.

You can also choose a combination of the two, however please ensure you do not register a domain name that is awkwardly long… if you register a domain name that is too long, it can take away for the credibility you are trying to build and it can be very hard for visitors to remember, which is counterproductive to what you are trying to accomplish by registering a domain name.
How to Register a Domain Name
When it comes to registering a domain name there are two options.
  1. Let us register it for you.
  2. Register it yourself.
If you order our basic web site package, it comes with your main domain registration for free. If you would like to register additional domain names, the cost is only $15-$19/year depending on the domain extension you choose (.com, .ca, .net, .net, .info, etc.).

You can also register your own domain name. If you choose to do so, I highly recommend Godaddy.com. They are the number one company for domain registrations, have very affordable prices, and in fact, are the same company we use to register our domain names.
Some Tips on Registering Domain Names
  1. A domain name can be paid for typically by using a credit card or Paypal. We can accept cash or Cheque in person if you are in London, Ontario.
  2. Optionally, you can register the same domain name with different extensions (.com, .ca, .net, .org, .info, etc.). The befit to doing so, is you would prevent other people from copying your domain name. If somebody copies your domain name but with a different extension, and offers the same services as you, they might be able to intercept customers who were meaning to visit your web page. On the other hand, if you are not concerned about this, you can save money by sticking with just your main domain name extension.
  3. Another option you can choose when registering a domain name, is domain privacy. For an extra fee, a domain registrar will use their own generic information in the public database which might help prevent you from receiving spam or other unwanted emails. Again, this is another of example where it just depends if you are worried about this or not. If this is a concern to you, it is worth the extra fee or otherwise you can save yourself some money.
  4. Some domain name registrars will charge a small ICANN (Ineternet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) or CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority) fee. This is normal.
